#2 Feminism
Have you ever been told that you have to look or act a certain way, just because you were born a certain gender?
Have you ever heard of the phrases "stop being a girl" or "man up"?
Hello again. 🤗
Today's topic is feminism. Now, feminism is having equal rights for all genders, not just for one. If you believe in equality for everyone, no matter their gender, skin colour or background then you are a feminist, like me. Being a feminist means that you care about everyone and that you believe that males can be sensitive and females can be strong. If you are a feminist then you believe in equal pay, human (both male and female) right's and gender quality for everyone.
It was International Women's Day on the 8th of March 2022. This year the theme was 'BreaktheBias.'
My journey of becoming a feminist started after I read the novel series, The Spinster Club by Holly Bourne. There are four books in the series, starting with Am I Normal Yet? The book series has now become one of my all-time favorite reads. I highly recommend it. The series includes three books about three best friends: Evie, Amber and Lottie. Each book is written in each of the girl's perspective. Holly Bourne is a feminist and she has made her characters feminists as well! In the first book, the girls talk about inequality between females and males and they talk about changing the meaning of the word 'spinster'. The word spinster means an unmarried woman, normally beyond the usual age of marriage but the girls want to change the word to mean young and independent. Which leads to the girls starting a Spinster Club! I strongly encourage you to start a Spinster Club at your school or just spread the word about changing the meaning of the word 'spinster'.
Another thing that is mentioned in the Spinster Club series is the Bechdel Test. The Bechdel Test is a real thing in real life, it was created by Alison Bechdel. It is a test for any work of fiction, books or movies (mostly movies and films). To pass the test, the work of fiction must have at least two women in it, these two women must talk to each other and that they must discuss something other then males. This might seem an easy test to pass but you will be surprise on how many movies fail this test. Some of the movies that fail the Bechdel Test include:
- The Lord of the Rings
- Ratatouille
- Avatar
- The Hunger Games!
- Toy Story 2
- Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2
- Finding Nemo
And so much more! If you don't believe me you can watch these movies and prove me wrong.
That's all for today. Stay Covid safe and spread the word about changing the meaning of the word 'spinster'!
